Improved wear resistance in alumina-PTFE nanocomposites with irregular shaped nanoparticles

چکیده
Past studies with PTFE nanocomposites showed up to 600× improvements in wear resistance over unfilled PTFE with the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles. Irregular shaped nanoparticles are used in this study to increase the mechanical entanglement of PTFE fibrils with the filler. The tribological properties of 1, 2, 5 and 10 wt.% filled samples are evaluated under a normal pressure and sliding speed of 6.3 MPa and 50.8 mm/s, respectively. The wear resistance was found to improve 3000× over unfilled PTFE with the addition of 1 wt.% nanoparticles. The 5 wt.% sample had the lowest steady state wear rate of K= 1.3× 10−7 mm3/N m and the lowest steady friction coefficient with μ= 0.21. ©

Wear of Polytetrafluoroethylene Nanocomposites: Effects of Dispersion, Crystallinity and Toughness
Solid lubricants are commonly found in applications where more traditional lubrication techniques are undesirable or precluded. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an attractive solid lubricant, but high wear rates limit its use. While nanofillers have been found, in some cases, to provide wear resistance without introducing other detrimental effects, the mechanisms of wear resistance remain uncl...
متن کاملTribological Sensitivity of PTFE/Alumina Nanocomposites to a Range of Traditional Surface Finishes
Wear tests were performed with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) + Al2O3 nanocomposites on various manufactured surfaces to determine whether or not the wear resistance of these nanocomposites is a strong function of surface preparation. Four different surface finishes of grade 304 stainless steel counterfaces were used: electropolished (Rq = 88 nm), lapped (Rq = 161 nm), wet-sanded (Rq = 390 nm),...
متن کاملEpoxy, ZnO, and PTFE nanocomposite: friction and wear optimization
To lower the friction coefficient and increase the wear resistance of epoxy, nanoparticles of zinc oxide and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were added in small volume percents to an epoxy matrix. Tribological testing of the samples in this study was completed on a linear reciprocating tribometer with a 250 N normal load and a 50.8 mm/s sliding speed. Several samples were made and tested followi...
متن کاملThe Effect of Simultaneous Incorporation of PTFE Nanoparticles and Carbon Nanotubes on the Tribological Behavior of Ni-P Coating
In some engineering fields, wear resistance and a low friction coefficient are required at the sametime. In this research, PTFE nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes were co-deposited within Ni-Pmatrix to obtain an Ni-P-PTFE-CNT hybrid coating for wear resistance and a low friction coefficient. The tribological properties of the deposits were evaluated by pin on disc tribometer. T...

In the past 30 years, electroless nickel (EN) plating has grown to such proportions that these coatings and their applications are now found underground, in outer space, and in a myriad of areas in between. Moreover, in order to further improve the mechanical and tribological properties of the nickel-phosphorous (Ni-P) coatings, Ni-P/PTFE composite coatings can be obtained, which provides even ...
